Allow for deep customization with a Shopify product designer app. We run down three of the most popular.

So you’re out of ideas for a gift to buy your mom for mother’s day. You know she loves a scented candle, but after giving her the same gift year in, year out, it’s about as meaningful as wrapping up a brick at this point. But if you could customize the candle with a personal message… Well that’s a different story.

Customers love being able to customize their own designs. Having customization as an option can only enhance your sales. Most customization companies allow you to add or change the text on the product, but what if your customers could design exactly what they have envisioned?

We’re comparing 3 Shopify product designer apps that are available in the Shopify app store.

3. Customify ‑ Product Customizer

Price: From $15/month. 14-day free trial
Review star rating on Shopify App Store: 4.4 (out of 198)
Launched on Shopify App Store: 2014

Customify is one of the most (if not the most) established Shopify product designer apps out there and has provided a reliable service to many happy customers.

The interface is totally customizable, meaning that you can match the application to fit the style of your brand.

Customify also allows customers to save their progress when designing so that if for any reason they need to delay making a decision they can easily resume designing at a later date.

Its lower star rating is partly due to the fact that they experienced a problem with their servers in late 2020, an issue which they now claim has been resolved. They now run in multiple high-quality servers to handle high traffic sites and deliver a good performance.

2. Zakeke Product Customizer

Price: From $8.99/month. 14-day free trial.
Review star rating on Shopify App Store: 4.7 (out of 88)
Launched on Shopify App Store: 2017

Zakeke’s impressive 3D and Augmented Reality feature allows your customers to see their personalized product in situ and in motion. Though it’s not very easy to implement these features yourself Zakeke has a great reputation for excellent customer service to help you make the most of this feature.

You can style the interface to be in keeping with your brand, and reviewers praise Zakeke for being more modern and smoother than Customify.

Zakeke also offers an affordable option for those who want to dip their toe in the world of customization. The $8.99/month pricing option is quite limited though, and only allows for 3 customizable products, rising to 25 customizable products at $14.99/month – still hardly a bank breaker for a small business.

1. Lumise ‑ POD Product Designer

Price: From $14.89/month. 15-day free trial.
Review star rating on Shopify App Store: 4.8 (out of 53)
Launched on Shopify App Store: 2019

Winning the top spot is also the youngest app in our top 3 pick of Shopify product designer apps. Lumise is fast gaining traction as a popular alternative to more established product designer apps on Shopify.

Reviewers praise Lumise for its superior text editor, easy-to-use drag and drop editor, and high-quality functionality on both desktop and mobile.

With Lumise, customers can export their designs in order to continue with their purchase on a different device or at a different time. Lumise also makes it easy for people to import their own designs.

Currently, Lumise is only available in a few select languages (unlike Zakeke and Customify that both automatically change the language in their interface to match that of your business. But for businesses with customers who speak predominantly English, Arabic, Vietnamese or Japanese, this app is, in our opinion, second-to-none,
